Faroe Islands

Faroe Islands

The Faroe Islands are situated about 350 kilometres to the north of Scotland. The archipelago consists of 18 islands and the topography is mainly hilly with its highest point (Slættaratindur) being 882 metres above sea level. The coastline is mostly bordered by cliffs that are often adorned by huge seabird colonies. The Faroe Islands are peppered with fishing villages and have a rich Norse Heritage.

Climate
The climate around the Faroe Islands is maritime sub-Arctic and the weather is quite changeable, varying from brilliant sunshine to misty hill fog to showers. The Gulf Stream encircling the islands tempers the climate making the winters mild, 3º to 4ºC (37º to 39ºF) and the summers cool, 9º to 11ºC (48º to 52ºF). The islands are windy and cloudy throughout the year with over 260 rainy days.

Flora & Fauna

PuffinsOn the islands of Skuvøy, Fugløy and Mykines, the sight of thousands of guillemots, kittiwakes and puffins is breathtaking - and the sound deafening.

The puffins are one of the major attractions for visitors. Their brightly coloured bill and its willingness to remain posed with fish in its beak, makes the bird the ideal photo opportunity for any budding ornithologist. Pilot Whales occur in Faroese waters as well as Bottlenose, Fin and Killer Whales, and Grey Seals.

Frequently visited
places

Frequently visited places in Faroe Islands are:
(For more detailed information on our programmes, please see the itineraries section)

  • Thorshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands and also the cultural centre. In the harbour the small Faroese boats are a reminder of the Viking origins of the islanders. The walkers among us can make an exciting two hours walk across the hills to Kirkjubøer where they will find a medieval cathedral.
  • Saksun, tucked away at the head of a fjord which was once a superb natural harbour. Today the bay is full of sand and we can only enter by zodiac at high tide. At Saksun there is a Natural Heritage Museum. Continuing along the north side of Streymoy we pass huge seabird colonies.
  • Mykines is home to a Northern Gannet colony. These majestic birds have chosen this western outpost of the Faroe Islands for their home, the only one in the archipelago. Even from a distance the visitor can see the birds sitting on top of the stacks with their young ones.
