27-11-2009 | Successful search for the Emperor!
Vessel: Professor Molchanov.
Date: 27-11-2009. Time: 01:37 CET
Position: 64'11S ; 56'59W
The expedition had a cold and rough continental landing at Brown Bluff on 26 November. The ship continued heading southwards through the Antarctic Sound with numerous gigantic tabular icebergs in the vicinity. The recent reports warned of dense ice in the Weddell Sea. However, strong NW winds within the last couple of days must have pushed the ice SE and left a track of open water. The expedition leader reports from a position between Cockburn Island and James Clark Ross Island along a densely packed sea ice edge littered with icebergs and bergy bits.
Wildlife: Snow petrels, Adelie Penguin, Crabeater Seals, a few Weddell Seals on our search for the illusive Emperor Penguin. Just before dinner a great discovery: Three Emperor Penguins on the fast ice about 1000 meters from the ship. After drifting in the pack ice for a while, another Emperor Penguin came as close as 300 meters to the ship. Great day ! Today, the expedition is planning to land at Devil Island in the morning and Paulet in the afternoon.
Professor Multanovskiy is currently under charter, therefore no reports from expedition leader but updates on the position of the vessel can be seen on the google map.
