Plancius named in Vlissingen
Plancius named in Vlissingen

On Saturday, November 14, Oceanwide Expeditions celebrated the launching of the new 3,434-ton 110-berth expedition vessel Plancius in the town of Vlissingen, The Netherlands. Named after the famous Arctic explorer, Petrus Plancius, the ship promises to start a whole new way of experiencing expedition travel, the Plancius way!

Just in time around 11:00 clock, the weather changed from rain to sunshine. From 12:00 clock the guests arrived and gathered in the panorama lounge of the vessel for welcome tea and coffee.

At 13:00 clock, approximately 200 invited guests witnessed the naming of the ship. The climax was imminent, when all the guests and a few spectators listened to Janneke van Gessel, the mother of the owner Michel van Gessel, who gave a short speech close to the bow of the ship. The big moment arrived when Iza van der Hulst, the 10-year-old daughter of the chief project manager, christened the ship the "Plancius". She swung the bottle of champagne (Moët & Chandon) against the ship's bow where it finally burst under big round of  applause.

We wish "Plancius" all the best and always have enough water under her keel!
