Q: What is the Temperature and Weather Like in Northern Norway?

The section of Northern Norway that you visit will have a big impact on the type of climate that you can expect. Precipitation falls frequently throughout the year, and some areas of Northern Norway can be extremely windy. In Brønnøysund, it is common for the temperature to remain below freezing from December through February, but the cold season is expanded from November to April in Tromsø.

During the summer, it is typical for Northern Norway to have a 24-hour average temperature of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit). Again, there are several differences based on exact locations. Brønnøysund enjoys the longest duration of summer at an average of 108 days, but summer ends after only 50 days in Hammerfest.  Svalbard is usually around -16 to -12 degrees Celsius (3 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit) during the winter, and it warms up to 4 to 6 degrees Celsius (39 to 43 degrees Fahrenheit) in the summer.

PLEASE NOTE: We no longer offer expedition cruises in Northern Norway. Please see our numerous other voyages that operate in the Arctic and Antarctica.
