The madder cliffs of Kinnes Cove

Kinnes Cove is a splendid landing site due in no small part to the Madder Cliffs that can be seen there. Rising some 305 meters (1,000 feet) above sea level, the cliffs are named after the red vegetable pigment madder because of the red coloration of the rocks.

The cove is situated on the west side of Joinville Island, northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Members of the Dundee whaling expedition of 1892–1893 discovered and named the spot after their sponsor, Robert Kinnes.
